Seed treatment is a process of application of chemical or protectants to seeds that prevent the carriage of insects or disease causing pathogens in or on the seeds. Seed treatment also enables the seed to overcomes seelling infections by soil borne fungi.

To control disease by treated the seed with fungicide or oregano mercurial compounds like captain, thiram, Carbendazim,agrosan, etc... to control paddy blast seed is also treated with agrosan 3 gram per kg of seeds.

To have convenience in sowing
Due to the special characteristics of the seed like fuzz of cotton seed, coriander seeds,small seeds of chilli,rahi, bajara etc.. e.g. coriander seed is to be splitter,by rubbing it against hard surface. Seed of chilli, sesamum , bajara and mixed with fine sand or soil.
To have quick germination
To have quick germination with broken thick seed coat by mixing them with coarse gritty sand and trampling or pounding it lightly in mother with a wooden pestle for breaking the thick seed code for soaked the seed in water for a specified time e.g. cotton seed or paddy seed is soaked in water before actual sowing.
To increase nitrogen fixation in legumes :
legume seeds are inoculated with a particular rhizobium culture. This is mixed with jaggery solution and applied to seed and dried in shade. It increases nodulation and thereby nitrogen fixation.
To break dormancy
To protect the seed against insect pest.
